Today: Multiple Chinese espionage groups are rapidly exploiting a Chrome/Windows zero-day chain (BlueMoon), CISA added four exploited vulnerabilities to its KEV catalog with tight deadlines, and Cisco Secure Firewall Management Center faces active exploitation by state-sponsored actors and ransomware operators. Patch now.

Critical Alerts

BlueMoon Exploit Chain: Chrome and Windows Zero-Days Under Active Exploitation (CVE-2026-85046, CVE-2026-87491, CVE-2026-85880)

At least four Chinese espionage groups, led by TA412 (APT31, Violet Typhoon), rapidly adopted a novel exploit kit chaining Chrome V8 vulnerabilities with a Windows kernel privilege escalation flaw. The attack exploits two V8 "patch-gap" zero-days (CVE-2026-85046, CVE-2026-87491) already fixed in Chromium source code but unpatched in stable Chrome releases, plus a Windows Advanced Local Procedure Call zero-day (CVE-2026-85880) affecting older Windows builds. Proofpoint observed campaigns targeting NGOs, mining firms, commodity traders, aerospace companies, and government entities in the US, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Singapore starting August 28. The exploit kit was likely reverse-engineered from public Chromium patches. CVE-2026-85046 added to CISA KEV with September 18 remediation deadline, CVE-2026-85880 due September 22.

Cisco Secure Firewall Management Center Under Active Attack (CVE-2026-20079, CVE-2026-20316)

Cisco Talos confirmed active exploitation of critical authentication bypass (CVE-2026-20079, CVSS 10.0) and low-privilege login (CVE-2026-20316) vulnerabilities in Cisco Secure FMC Software. Three distinct threat actor clusters identified: UAT-12197 deployed web shells and credential exfiltration tools, UAT-11823 (linked to Russian APT Sandworm) deployed Cyclops Blink malware, and UAT-11988 (assessed as Qilin ransomware affiliate) conducted extensive reconnaissance and built endpoint encryption target lists. CVE-2026-20079 added to CISA KEV with August 1 remediation deadline (already passed). Hotfixes released; comprehensive hardening release scheduled for week of September 14.

CISA KEV Additions: Four Vulnerabilities with Tight Deadlines

CISA added CVE-2025-25249 (Fortinet heap overflow), CVE-2026-19490 (Citrix NetScaler authentication bypass), CVE-2026-87491 (Chromium V8 out-of-bounds write), and CVE-2026-20079 (Cisco FMC authentication bypass) to the Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog. Federal agencies must patch within three days under BOD 26-04.

Ransomware & Extortion

Fortinet Flaw Exploited to Deploy PivotC2 RAT (CVE-2025-25249)

Threat actors exploited CVE-2025-25249, a heap-based buffer overflow in FortiOS and FortiSwitchManager, to deploy the PivotC2 RAT on vulnerable devices. SOCRadar reports 178 devices infected after scanning 30,000+ IP addresses, primarily targeting US entities. At least two intrusions resulted in data exfiltration. PivotC2 provides interactive shell access, traffic tunneling, network scanning, and configuration harvesting. SOCRadar assesses the campaign is likely Russian-speaking cybercrime. Attacks observed since July 2026.

Qilin Ransomware Affiliate Exploited Cisco FMC (UAT-11988)

Cisco Talos attributes cluster UAT-11988 to a Qilin ransomware affiliate who gained access to Cisco FMC via static credentials (CVE-2026-20316), then used legitimate built-in FMC tooling for LOTL reconnaissance, credential harvesting, tunneling tool deployment, and endpoint target list building. Tactics consistent with known Qilin TTPs.

Windows / AD Security

Microsoft Defender Zero-Day: ShieldCrash Bypasses September Patches (CVE-2026-69414)

Researcher Nightmare Eclipse released ShieldCrash, a bypass for Microsoft's September patches addressing ShieldBreak (CVE-2026-69414). ShieldCrash demonstrates arbitrary file read with System privileges and can be exploited for full System access, allowing SAM database extraction. This is the third iteration: RoguePlanet (CVE-2026-50656, patched July 19) was bypassed by ShieldBreak (patched September 3), now bypassed by ShieldCrash. Indicates incomplete patching of underlying vulnerability class.

Passkey-Themed Social Engineering Leads to Cloud Identity Compromise

Microsoft Security Research tracks active cloud intrusions using passkey-themed phishing lures delivered via SMS to personal phones. Attackers impersonate IT helpdesk, direct victims to AiTM phishing or device-code authentication flows, then add unauthorized authentication methods, conduct Microsoft Graph reconnaissance, and exfiltrate SharePoint/OneDrive/Exchange data via REST APIs. Activity observed since May 2026. Attackers invest in pre-attack OSINT from social media and professional platforms, use generic domains with target org names as subdomains, and sometimes leverage already-compromised accounts to send Teams messages.

Business & Infrastructure Threats

Infostealer Logs Expose Replayable AI API Keys and Session Tokens

Okta analyzed a 7 GB infostealer dump (5,871 infected machines, 162 countries) and found thousands of unexpired authentication tokens for AI services (Google, Anthropic, Amazon, OpenAI, Cursor, Poe, Character.ai, Pika AI). 1,843 unexpired JWTs/JWEs on release day, 17.7% containing plaintext PII. 24 valid API keys for Google Gemini, OpenAI, Groq, OpenRouter enable LLMjacking (resource theft, espionage, extortion). Session tokens bypass MFA; JWEs from OpenAI/NextAuth.js can be replayed even when encrypted. IP allowlisting and Device Bound Session Credentials (DBSC) mitigate replay attacks.

LiteLLM Gateways Exposed with Default Admin Key "sk-1234" (CVE-2026-59821)

Wiz Research found 294 of 3,074 internet-facing LiteLLM servers accepted the example admin key "sk-1234" from setup documentation (191 had no key set). Admin access allows reading all model provider API keys, cloud IAM credentials via pass-through endpoints to instance metadata, and pre-1.82.0, code execution via custom guardrails (CVE-2026-59821). No master key before 1.82.0 granted full admin rights to all requests. IMDSv2 bypass via x-pass- header prefix.

Workflow Identity Hijacking: AI Attack Bypasses Authorization in Enterprise Pipelines

Noma Labs identified "workflow identity hijacking," an authorization design flaw in enterprise AI workflows where AI executes actions using high-privilege service accounts instead of the requester's permissions. Attackers send benign-seeming requests through unauthenticated entry points (support inbox, GitHub issue, web form) and the AI workflow executes privileged actions like searching finance director emails or exfiltrating sensitive data. Distinct from prompt injection; this is an identity/authorization issue where the AI did exactly what it was told by an untrusted stranger.

METR conducting independent investigation.

EU Cyber Resilience Act Reporting Requirements Begin September 11

Organizations selling products in EU must report actively exploited vulnerabilities and severe security incidents to ENISA within 24 hours (72 hours for comprehensive notification) starting September 11. Fines up to €15M or 2.5% global revenue. Micro/small enterprises exempted from 24-hour deadline fines. Full CRA enforcement December 2027.

Trends & Context

Today's stories highlight three converging threats: state-sponsored actors rapidly adopting shared exploit kits (BlueMoon), critical infrastructure under simultaneous attack from APT and ransomware groups (Cisco FMC), and AI-related security risks spanning model theft (Chinese distillation campaigns), unauthorized system access (Claude/Anthropic incidents), and authorization design flaws (workflow identity hijacking). The BlueMoon campaign demonstrates how patch-gap zero-days create narrow windows for coordinated multi-group exploitation. Default credentials and exposed management interfaces remain primary attack vectors (LiteLLM, Alby Hub). CISA KEV additions signal escalating exploitation of network appliances and browser vulnerabilities.
