Today: Shopify's new Canvas builder lets you design your entire online store by chatting with AI. Photon raised $4.5M to help developers build agents over iMessage and WhatsApp. OpenAI's Dots agent tries to compete with Meta's free Muse but costs $100/month.
Shopify launched Canvas, a site-building tool that lets merchants create and customize their entire online store by chatting with Sidekick, its AI agent. Instead of editing themes by dragging blocks or writing code, you describe what you want, and the AI builds it in real time while you watch. This isn't a preview; it's the actual store code rendering live, so you can test interactivity, animation, and responsiveness across screen sizes as you go.
Canvas joins a wave of AI-powered site builders from Wix, Squarespace, Webflow, and Framer, but Shopify's integration with its full e-commerce platform gives it an edge for merchants who want to sell fast. The tool is desktop-only for now and doesn't yet support third-party themes, app blocks, or translations, but Shopify plans to expand those capabilities. For small business owners who can't afford developers or don't have time to learn code, this could lower the barrier to launching an online store significantly.

Crunchbase API relaunched with AI-powered predictions. The free tier is gone, but the new Custom Data Plan includes predictive intelligence that forecasts funding rounds, acquisitions, and closures with up to 95% accuracy. Use it for deal sourcing, CRM enrichment, and competitor M&A monitoring. Pricing is custom, negotiated with sales, and includes an MCP connector. If you're building lead-gen workflows or need signals that a prospect has budget, this is worth the call.

n8n now lets you top up AI Assistant credits. If you're on n8n Cloud (Starter or Pro) and run out of credits mid-build, you can buy more instead of waiting until the 1st of the month. Manual top-ups or auto-refill options are available, with a monthly spending cap. The new Assistant credits tab shows your balance, spend chart, and which users are burning the most credits. A simple workflow build costs 50-100 credits; a complex debugging session can hit 300-600. Extra credits carry over for 12 months.

Google's Guided Vision lets AI read and describe your surroundings in real time. Available in Gemini Live on Android, it uses your phone's camera to give audio descriptions of what you're looking at: reading small text, finding objects, or describing details on specific items. Designed for people with low vision, it also works in Google TalkBack or via an accessibility shortcut. You can ask follow-up questions, like requesting the expiration date on a product it helped you find. Don't use it for navigation or obstacle detection; it's not a replacement for a cane or mobility aid.

Legato Frames: AI hearing glasses for $999. The startup's flagship product integrates hearing-assistance technology into eyewear frames, designed for adults with up to moderate hearing loss. Unlike traditional hearing aids, Legato uses AI to distinguish voices from background noise and amplifies voices while reducing unwanted sounds. The open-ear design doesn't broadcast to people around you; a dual-speaker system directs sound toward the wearer and cancels 99% of sound that escapes. Weighs 34 grams, offers 10-12 hours of battery, and supports prescription lenses and Bluetooth streaming. Available on Legato's website and through select eye care providers; eligible for vision insurance.

Alpine Roofing automates 50-100 hours of office work per week with Zapier. The roofing company runs 12,500 automated steps monthly, handling tasks like copying leads, updating job cards, filing estimates, and sending notices. Co-founder Ben Beckett built a system that tracks every customer and project in one surface, connected across apps. When he wanted to build faster, he joined the early access program for Next-Gen Zaps and pointed Claude at his existing Zaps, cutting build time significantly. For service businesses juggling hundreds of small tasks per job, automation is the difference between scaling and drowning.

Airbnb's CEO says chatbots aren't the right interface for e-commerce. Brian Chesky argues that chatbots give you a few options at a time and require multiple turns before reaching a result, which doesn't work for browsing or shopping. Travel studies show people derive more pleasure from planning and anticipating travel than from traveling itself, so taking away the browsing experience is a mistake. Chesky also sees chatbots as single-player interfaces, not collaborative ones, which matters for products like Airbnb that people often use with family and friends. Over the next three to six months, Airbnb's task is to explore "multiplayer" AI interfaces that several people can use at once.

OpenAI's Dots agent costs $100/month, restricted to Pro plan users. Dots is OpenAI's shot at competing with Meta's free Muse agent platform, but it's not free. Only users on the $100/month Pro plan and up can access Dots, while Muse is free for anyone with a Meta account. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said Dots uses a lot of compute and is starting out as a premium product, but the company plans to launch a mass-market version someday. If you're building agents for fintech, consumer AI, or vertical use cases, Photon (which raised $4.5M in seed funding) offers a platform to build agents over iMessage, WhatsApp, Telegram, SMS, RCS, email, and voice. Photon's open source version accounts for 98% of its use; the hosted version offers 99.95% uptime, SOC 2 Type II, and HIPAA compliance.

Anthropic committed $11.6 billion to Akamai over seven years. The deal gives Anthropic added computing capacity for AI workloads, and it validates Akamai's strategy to build a network of smaller data centers that can process AI workloads closer to users, reducing latency. Akamai trades at less than 16 times this year's expected earnings, and CNBC's Jim Cramer says investors are "basically getting the latest Anthropic partnership for free." The stock initially jumped on the news, then gave up most of those gains, creating a buying opportunity.

Albertsons expands its OpenAI partnership. The grocery chain is rolling out ChatGPT Enterprise across select teams and expanding its use of the OpenAI API for customer-facing experiences, including the new Safeway experience in ChatGPT. Shoppers can start with a recipe, photo, or simple request like "Plan pizza night for four," and ChatGPT surfaces relevant products, helps build a cart, and directs customers to Safeway to check out. The experience is planned to grow beyond Safeway to other grocery brands, including Albertsons, Vons, Jewel-Osco, Shaw's, ACME, and Tom Thumb.

Use API contract testing to catch breaking changes before they hit production. Most testing tells you whether an app works at a specific point in time. It doesn't guarantee an upstream API will keep behaving the same way after your code gets deployed. A provider can rename a field, change a data type, or make a previously optional value required weeks after your test suite passes. If nothing checks those responses in production, the change may go unnoticed until a downstream workflow fails. API contract testing verifies that the interface between a provider and consumer still matches the agreed contract, and it catches changes before they cause problems.
How API Contract Testing Prevents Production Failures
AI tools are getting easier to build with, but pricing and access models are diverging fast. Shopify's Canvas and n8n's Assistant top-ups lower friction for small businesses, while OpenAI's $100/month Dots pricing creates a barrier that Meta's free Muse doesn't have. The winner in the agent race won't be the best technology; it'll be the one that reaches the most users. Watch for platforms that make AI accessible without a steep learning curve or monthly bill.
