Frequently Asked Questions

How do I enable dark mode?

Click the ClearDark icon in your browser toolbar to open the popup, then toggle the switch. You can also press Alt+D to toggle dark mode instantly without opening the popup.

How do I exclude a site from dark mode?

Click the ClearDark icon and click "Disable for this site." The site will be added to your whitelist and dark mode will not apply there. Click again to re-enable.

Does ClearDark collect any data?

No. ClearDark makes zero network requests and collects no data whatsoever. Your settings are stored locally in your browser and never leave your device. See our privacy policy for full details.

Does ClearDark work offline?

Yes. ClearDark works entirely offline with no internet connection required. It applies CSS filters locally in your browser.

What permissions does ClearDark need?

Only two permissions:

  • activeTab -- to apply dark mode CSS to the current page when you activate the extension
  • storage -- to save your on/off preference and site whitelist across browser sessions

We do not request access to your browsing history, cookies, web requests, or any other sensitive data.

Why does a site look wrong with dark mode on?

ClearDark uses CSS filter inversion, which works well on most sites but may not look perfect on sites that already have a dark theme. Use the per-site whitelist to exclude those sites. As of v1.0.1, ClearDark automatically detects pages that already serve a dark variant (like YouTube, IMDB, or Google when your system is set to dark mode) and skips applying the filter to avoid flipping them to light.

Why doesn't dark mode apply on the Chrome Web Store or Edge Add-ons pages?

Browsers enforce a security policy that blocks extensions from injecting content scripts on their own store domains (chromewebstore.google.com, microsoftedge.microsoft.com/addons). This is not something any dark mode extension can override — it is a browser-level restriction, not a ClearDark limitation.

How do I uninstall ClearDark?

Right-click the ClearDark icon in your toolbar and select "Remove from Chrome" (or "Remove from Edge"). You can also go to your browser's extensions page (chrome://extensions or edge://extensions) and click Remove.
